Abstract
Tunisia, which covers an area of 164,000 km2, lies at the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, being sandwiched between Algeria to the west and Libya to the east. The mountains are of moderate relief, with various ranges rising to about 1,500 m. They are flanked by an arid plateau, passing into the Sahara Desert to the south. The Mediterranean coast in the north is highly dissected but passes eastwards to a fertile coastal strip, bordering the Gulf of Tunis.
