Electric drives are on a par with combustion engines when it comes to the wide variety available. The range extends from 48-V applications for lightweight city vehicles with 15 to 30 kW of power to more powerful high-voltage e-drives for battery-electric cars up to high-performance powertrains with several hundred kilowatts for cars and trucks. In addition to this, there are purely electrically driven hybrid vehicles with traction batteries and range extenders in the most diverse variations, for example in the form of a fuel cell. This all provides the potential for local, CO2-neutral powertrain solutions for almost every application, which could help electric mobility finally break through into the mass market. And then there are the economies of scale emerging with the increasing roll-out which will lead to a further reduction in manufacturing costs, in particular for batteries. …
