About this book

This book systematically presents the wireless sensing technology, which has become a promising sensing paradigm in recent years. It includes the introduction of underlying sensing principles, wireless signals, sensing methodologies and enabled applications. Meanwhile, it provides case studies to demonstrate how wireless sensing is applied for representative human and object sensing applications.

This book also provides a wireless sensing framework as a guidance to understand and design a wireless sensing system or prototype based on their needs. It also presents a critical investigation of the challenges in achieving wireless sensing in both signal-level and application-level contexts. Accordingly, it summarizes the typical solutions to tackle the related challenges.

Researchers and advanced-level students in computer science or electrical engineering working on the design of a wireless system will find this book useful as a reference. Professionals working in the wireless sensing industry will also find this book valuable as a reference tool.

Jiannong Cao, Yanni Yang
Chapter 2. Wireless Signals and Signal Processing
Abstract
This chapter outlines the wireless signals and signal processing methods used for wireless sensing. We first introduces the preliminary knowledge about how wireless signals are generated and received for sensing. Then, we show different kinds of wireless signals and their characteristics in sensing. Finally, we demonstrate the signal processing methods to deal with the noises and constraints in wireless signals and devices.
Jiannong Cao, Yanni Yang
Chapter 3. Wireless Sensing System Configurations
Abstract
This chapter introduces the configurations for deploying wireless sensing systems. The configuration of a wireless sensing system refers to how wireless transceivers are deployed. More specifically, the number of transceivers and where to place the transceivers are two main system configurations. In terms of the number of wireless transceivers, it can be divided into the single-transceiver and multi-transceiver settings. From the perspective of how wireless transceivers are placed, it can be categorized into device-based and device-free settings. In the following sections, we will introduce and compare different configurations in wireless sensing systems.
Jiannong Cao, Yanni Yang
Chapter 4. Wireless Sensing Methodologies
Abstract
This chapter introduces introduce the information that can be sensed using wireless signals and principal methodologies to obtain the information, including the model-based and data-driven methodologies.
Jiannong Cao, Yanni Yang
Chapter 5. Case Studies
Abstract
In this chapter, we showcase several case studies in applying wireless sensing to critical sensing applications and present our solutions to tackle the key challenges involved in these application scenarios, including human respiration monitoring, human and object indoor localization, and liquid fraud detection.
Jiannong Cao, Yanni Yang
Chapter 6. Conclusion
Abstract
In this chapter, we summarize the development of wireless sensing technologies and discuss prosperous directions in this area. First, we present our observations of the general trend and requirements for promoting wireless sensing.
