7. Working with LoRa

Abstract

LPWAN solutions are key to supporting long range interaction with sensors and actuators. In this context, LoRa is one of the most popular mechanisms that supports LPWAN sensor readout communications. Unfortunately, LoRa does not natively support IPv6 and, therefore, is not fully IoT compatible. When adding an adaptation layer to the LoRa’s link layer, it is possible to open the doors for full IPv6 connectivity. This chapter explores the deployment of a LoRa based stack that supports IPv6 and upper IoT layers. Specifically, it supports network, transport, and application layers that support the transmission of temperature sensor readouts from the device to the application.
