3. A Novel Framework for Reconstructing Bandlimited Signals Encoded by Integrate-and-Fire Neurons

Abstract

This chapter introduces a new framework for studying time encoding and decoding by reformulating the input dependent nonuniform sampling operation performed by an IF neuron on a function u as an equivalent input independent uniform sampling operation performed on an auxiliary function \( \bar{\psi }' \). Under the assumption that the input is bandlimited, the new framework forms the basis for two new reconstruction methods for the IF neuron. A reconstruction condition is derived by introducing new theoretical results characterizing function \( \bar{\psi }' \). Using numerical simulations, it is proven that the new algorithms have a similar level of accuracy, but are significantly faster that the state-of-the-art reconstruction algorithms.
