This paper describes the design an implementation of a prototype expert database system for programming classical music, as a case study to demonstrate the applicability of using an expert database system approach to solve programming decisions. The paper describes the process of acquiring and representing expert knowledge; the development, testing, and implementation of the prototype; and the lessons learned during the course of developing the system.
