The developments in technology over the last few years and the emergence of Information Technology as a new scientific discipline have greatly increased the practical applications of Information Theory. However, technological progress has been so rapid that many would-be information technologists have been unable to develop the necessary theoretical background on which real understanding and progress depends. Information Theory is the basic theory behind Information Technology and an understanding of its principles is essential in order to exploit the great potential offered by Information Technology.
