ARTEX1 is a hybrid knowledge based system combining logic programming and object- oriented representation techniques. Its application domain are routing systems for high-quality audio signals, which are assembled of modules out of a determined set of components. Due to the large number of different configurations of routing systems, the diagnostic knowledge of ARTEX has to work with every individual system derived from the generic system model. This paper describes the integration of an object-oriented system model with diagnosis rules, as well as the flexible and concise diagnostic strategies enabled by this integration. ARTEX is used for several tasks during the life-cycle of an audio routing system.
