The Fujita and McCarthy review (Chapter 31a, hereafter referred to as F & M) gives an excellent historical discussion of radar applications to aviation meteorology, as well as a thorough description of the downburst as an aviation hazard. Because these areas are covered adequately in F & M, this report will concentrate on future directions that operational aviation meteorology should take.
