I do not mean dimensional calibration. We are almost all guilty of the uncalibrated observations in the execution of a failure investigation. Extrapolation a visual observation from one part of our experience (or literature, etc) and applying it to the situation before us. Sometimes, these observations are crucial, even necessary, when calibrated data isn’t available at a particular point in the investigative timeline. The trouble becomes much more clear when we are forced to rely on such observations early in an investigation and fail to come back and “clean up” the prior thinking. …
