Despite many years of requirements engineering research, many software-intensive systems still fail due to problems in the identification of requirements or their continuous management and monitoring. Empirical studies show an encouraging usage of classical semi-formal methods including some degree of validation. In critical systems, growing usage of formal methods can be observed, provided they are supported by suitable tools for analysis and testing. Many firms use multiple methods for capture and analysis, and most – with unfortunate exceptions in large-scale prestige projects – pursue a risk- and market-driven staging of systems. …
