Footnotes
1
A bail-in is the counterpart of a bail-out, in which the government saves a financial institution by “bailing it out” (i.e., by buying a large share of it or paying off debts on its behalf).

2
Admittedly, the authority in question must be in a very bad situation and under specific circumstances for a bail-in scenario to take place, but the argument remains that it is a possibility under Europe’s current framework for resolving failing banks (the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive of 2014). As history has shown, this possibility is not only theoretical.

3
Inflation measured through CPI over 2001–2021; last database update on September 16, 2022.

4
With a 10% inflation rate, a currency loses half its value in about seven years.

6
A tendency known as a high time preference and investigated by Saifedean Ammous in The Bitcoin Standard [56] and The Fiat Standard [61].
