For a differential equation of order n, or a system of differential equations whose orders add up to n, one needs n conditions in order to single out one solution from among a family of ∞n. if these n conditions refer to a single point x0, one speaks of an initial value problem, since — apart from singular cases — one has enough information to integrate away from x0.
