In 1968, I received a phone call from Robert Webber, telling me that I had to help out a friend of his who had just been arrested and jailed on a charge of criminal trespass. I was practicing law at the time. The someone turned out to be Peter McHugh, who was the stepson of Frank McHugh, one of the Warner Brothers stable of actors who appeared in many of its comedies and gangster movies. McHugh was a teacher at Columbia University, and he and a friend of his, Alan Blum, also a professor and teacher at Columbia University, were arrested because they took possession of the university premises, and helped refuse to allow classes from being conducted. …
