Abstract

Petroleum is mainly composed of various types of hydrocarbons, i.e., compounds consist of carbon and hydrogen, some of which also contain hetero-atoms—mostly sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen, and trace metals (mainly Ni and V). Petroleum molecules can be divided into saturated, unsaturated and polar compounds. The hydrocarbon types include paraffins, naphthenes (cycloparaffins), aromatics, and hydrocarbons containing heteroatoms such as S, N, O and trace metals. Molecular composition strongly affects the properties of crude oil and its fractions.
