Composition and poling process dependence of phase and piezoelectric activity of Er:PMN-PT crystals

Abstract

Piezoelectric response of erbium-doped (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 (Er:PMN-PT) single crystals with various compositions and phases was studied using Rayleigh analysis. High temperature poling process was introduced to optimize the piezoelectric properties of the [001]-oriented Er:PMN-PT crystals. The Rayleigh analysis results show that the intrinsic contribution was dominated to the piezoelectric properties for the Er:PMN-PT crystals. The intrinsic and extrinsic piezoelectric responses of the Er:PMN-xPT, 0.29 ≤ x ≤ 0.33, showed the larger values (~ 2000 pC/N) for the composition near the R-M phase boundary. The maximum piezoelectric coefficient was 2200 pC/N for the Er:PMN-0.33PT crystals. The piezoelectric response can be significantly enhanced by the high-temperature poling process, and the maximum was 2800 pC/N for the Er:PMN-0.29PT crystal. This ultra-high piezoelectric response was attributed to easing in the polarization rotation of the rhombohedral phase at high temperatures.
