Excerpt

Mainstream computing science has a fascinating history, revealing progressively different ways of developing interactive systems. Initially, computer technology was designed and maintained by a few experts for themselves alone to use. In a subsequent phase, experts designed principally for other experts. Then designers produced systems for clients, often based on their own insights, assumptions and intuitions. Subsequently, system design switched emphasis from technology and functionality alone to include user requirements and accessibility. Today, there is a higher aspiration to technology that delivers “integrated environments of use” for “anyone, anytime, anywhere” [4]. This is by no means an easy goal, and current experience calls out loudly for more and better research to provide the methods, insights and standards that are needed to develop effective inclusively designed solutions. …
