Controllable synthesis of ytterbium titanate nanostructures with different morphologies by novel approach

Abstract

Pure ytterbium titanate (Yb2TiO5) nanoparticles were prepared via novel sol–gel method with the aid of ytterbium nitrate hexahydrate and tetra-n-butyl titanate in presence of different acids such as cinnamic acid, salicylic acid, and oxalic acid. The effect of different acids on the size, and morphology of Yb2TiO5 nanoparticles were investigated. The as-obtained Yb2TiO5 nanoparticles were analyzed by UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, and X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of as-prepared Yb2TiO5 nanoparticles were also investigated with vibrating sample magnetometer. In addition, methyl orange was chosen as a dye water pollution to evaluate its degradation by as-synthesized Yb2TiO5 nanoparticles under ultraviolet light irradiation. Furthermore, the photocatalysis results reveal that the maximum decolorization of 86% for methyl orange occurred with Yb2TiO5 nanoparticles in 70 min under ultraviolet light irradiation.
