Dem Comptroller wurden dabei primär finanzwirtschaftliche Aufgaben übertragen: „The duties of the Comptroller are largely financial and relate to the bonds, stocks, and securities owned by the Company; the issuance, cancellation and re-issuance of stock certificates; the issuance of negotiable bonds of the Company, and various other financial matters.“3 Nach der Einrichtung von Controllerstellen in anderen Eisenbahngesellschaften wurde 1892 erstmals auch in einem Industrieunternehmen, der General Electric Company, eine Controllerstelle mit ebenfalls finanzwirtschaftlicher Aufgabenstellung errichtet.4
