Often, scholars’ most meaningful findings come from research projects where their priors might have suggested an entirely opposite conclusion. Daniel DiSalvo, a third generation union member and Assistant Professor of Political Science in the Colin Powell School at The City College of New York-CUNY, has produced such a work on public sector unions in the United States. DiSalvo explains why membership in public sector unions has grown in recent decades, in contrast to private sector unions. He also analyzes why public sector unions do not add the same value as do private sector unions. Furthermore, unless the growing influence of public sector unions is counteracted, DiSalvo argues that the quality and quantity of government services will decline, the accountability of government will diminish, and the very integrity of our democracy will be threatened. …
