Abstract

Hydrogen effects on elastic and plastic behaviors of iron and steels are reviewed for both macroscopic and microscopic observations. Effects of experimental conditions are noticed. Tentative explanations of the results and elastic/atomistic calculations of the dislocation mobility are described. The hydrogen-assisted cracking and hydrogen-enhanced localized plasticity models proposed as the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement are presented.
