Abstract

The BMW Group has developed its own tool for ergonomic, and hazard risk assessments: SERA (Safety and Ergonomic Risk Assessment). This system is used across all international locations in the BMW Group. DWSM (Digital Workplace Stress Management) has the aim of automatically, objectively, and digitally capturing the postures and forces relevant to a SERA assessment. To capture the data a motion-capturing system and force measuring glove are used. The ergonomic assessment is determined from these two systems both analytically but also using machine learning algorithms. The goal of this publication is to describe the DWSM project broadly, including a more detailed description of the captured stresses and project timeline. DWSM is currently in the international rollout, which will enable the widespread use but also allow for user feedback regarding optimizations and new features. The major benefits of the DWSM in regard to ergonomic analyses is objectivity, improved data quality, and reduced assessment time.
Practical Relevance: Conventional ergonomic assessment methods rely heavily on subjectivity, and, depending on the level of detail required, can be very time consuming. Despite high levels of training and experience it is common to find both inter- and intra-rater differences for the same observed task. The DWSM (Digital Workplace Stress Management) demonstrates that, though the use of modern, digital technologies, it is possible to increase objectivity and data quality, while reducing the time required for ergonomic assessments.
