Intelligent Manufacturing is a key concept, developed during the past decades and nowadays gaining further momentum thanks to the potential brought by the Industry 4.0 vision. The expectation for the future is a transition towards Smart Factories built on the presence of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), also designated as Cyber-Physical Production Systems (shortly CPPS) or other similar terms. Trends and issues emerging along this transition are relevant for the future research, whereas the evolution of technologies determines the transformation of the manufacturing enterprises.
