Effect of an external magnetic field on micro-EDM milling of Inconel 718

Abstract

Micro-electrical discharge machining (micro-EDM) is a feasible method for machining microstructures. Applying an external magnetic field during micro-EDM is a convenient method for improving processing characteristics. However, there is still no agreement on the effect of an external magnetic field on the machined surface quality. And few papers explored the effect of direction of an external magnetic field on machining characteristics. In this study, the effect of an external magnetic field on plasma channel was explored. Micro-EDM milling experiments with and without the assistance of an external magnetic field were conducted, and the external magnetic field direction was selected to be parallel or perpendicular to the feed direction of milling. The machined surface was observed and analyzed. The effect of the external magnetic field on material removal rate (MRR), relative tool wear ratio (RTWR), and surface roughness (Ra) is discussed. The experimental results show that an external magnetic field of appropriate intensity can reduce the number of short circuits but has a slightly negative influence on MRR. The general conclusion that an external magnetic field parallel to the direction of feed can reduce surface roughness in micro-EDM milling can be drawn.
