Abstract

The Carbon–Bi2O3–TiO2 composite was prepared by sol–gel method and characterized by TG-DSC, EA, XPS, TEM, HRTEM, XRD, UV–Vis DRS and PL techniques. Besides, their photoactivities were evaluated by decomposing methyl orange in visible light. The degradation experiments showed that the sample sintered at 300 °C (C–Bi–Ti-300) displays the highest photocatalytic activity, and nearly 90.0% of methyl orange was decomposed after 120 min irradiation. The characterization results suggested that the C–Bi–Ti-300 composite has anatase crystal structure and exhibits a remarkable optical absorption in visible light region. Furthermore, TiO2, Bi2O3 and carbon are present mainly as separate phases in the C–Bi–Ti-300 composite, respectively. In addition, the mechanism for photocatalytic reaction was investigated, demonstrating that the enhanced photoactivity of the C–Bi–Ti-300 composite is ascribed to its low band gap energy and charge carrier recombination rate.
