Effect of Stirrer Parameters on the Efficiency of Mechanical Stirring as a Method of Bifilm Removal from the Melt

Abstract

In this research, the relative location of the impeller in the height of the melt, the diameter of the rotor and the presence of baffles in the crucible on the efficiency of mechanical stirring as a method of bifilm removal from the melt are investigated using a reduced pressure technique and a mathematical model. The results showed that decreasing the diameter of the rotor could increase the efficiency of bifilm removal from the melt dramatically. The location of the impeller at the height of the crucible and the presence of baffles also had a significant effect. The results also showed that the formation of vortex in the melt surface is not the only mechanism for the entrainment of bifilm defects into the melt during mechanical stirring. The formation of whirlpools in the melt below the melt surface is suggested to cause such entrainment.
