Effectiveness of geometrical parameters on discharge capacity of piano key weirs: a review

Abstract

Spillways, a major structure in dams for floodwater safety, have a huge impact on social life. The evolution of spillways has resulted in the Piano Key Weir (PKW) with high discharge efficiency, greater safety, a smaller structural footprint, and greater cost-effectiveness. The PKW possesses a complex structural nature, including many geometrical parameters, and its effect on discharge capacity is vital. This paper reviews the effect of geometrical parameters on discharge capacity under diverse conditions. In particular, this review highlights the importance of secondary parameters on discharge efficiency, distinguishes the variation of primary and secondary parameters, and the effect of geometrical and secondary parameters on discharge efficiency. Therefore, the identification of the effect of secondary parameters on the discharge capacity is critical to improving the efficiency of PKW, which has not received adequate attention from researchers so far. In comparison to conventional spillways, the PKW offers a superior alternative to enhance discharge capacity and safety, while mitigating the cost considerably.
