Abstract
Crossing the unfavorable geological body and ground interface is a control project in subsea tunnel construction. The stability of an unfavorable geological body and its connectivity with seawater affects the technical issues and risks associated with tunnel construction and controls parameters, such as tunnel buried depth. Regarding the engineering response, the following factors characterize the unfavorable geological section: ① high risk—it is prone to the occurrence of catastrophic accidents, such as water inrush; ② slow construction progress—it requires complex construction methods, such as construction in the water environment; ③ special support and pre-reinforcement means are required; ④ it requires special waterproof and drainage scheme and technical measures. Therefore, unfavorable geological sections are imperative in subsea tunnels’ planning, design, construction, and operation phases, sometimes even affecting tunnel scheme feasibility.
