Abstract

Flexi option like electrical energy storage is capable of influencing all locations of power system due to its sub-second response time. The economic feasibility of electrical energy storage is linked to its participation in the responsive electricity market. Fast frequency services tailor-made for electrical energy storage is a step toward its economic viability. This paper discusses the existing grid balancing strategies of representative developed and emerging economies and the status of electrical energy storage in these nations. In this study, the focus is on investigating the flexi ramp-up and ramp-down capability products introduced by representative developed economies for frequency regulation. Emerging economies may replicate experiences from representative developed economies by paving the way for electrical energy storage in grid balancing services by incorporating fast frequency response services in their respective electricity market.
