Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from passenger cars represent an important and growing contributor to climate change. Increasing the proportion of electric vehicles (EVs) in passenger car fleets could help to reduce these emissions, but their ability to do this depends on the fuel mix used in generating the electricity that energises EVs. This chapter analyses the indirect well-to-wheels CO2 emissions from EVs when run in a range of countries and compares these to well-to-wheels emissions data for a selection of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) (Holdway, Energy Environ Sci 3(12):1825−1832).

Data taken on 20th June 2011.

2
At time of writing, regular unleaded gasoline price was 136.9 pence per litre; approximate electricity price from Scottish and Southern Energy was 11.50 pence per kWh.

3
In the UK in 2011, the Nissan Leaf cost £25,990.

4
All data in this study are for 2006, the last year for which all data were available.

5
High voltage electricity transmission loss is approximately 7% [31].

7
These values are indicative only, as electricity in much of the US is generated and transmitted on a regional basis, in regions that may span several states and may not follow state boundaries.

9
The Nissan Leaf has a range of 175 km (109 mi) on the New European Driving Cycle. (www.nissan.co.uk).
