One of the most important discoveries in physics was made about one hundred and fifty years ago, when Faraday succeeded in producing electricity from magnetism. This is the phenomenon called electromagnetic induction, i.e. the production of an electromotive force in a conductor as it cuts across the lines of force of a magnetic field.
