This volume contains analyses on the domestic and international politics surrounding the role of China’s currency in the world economy. As noted in the preface, this volume continues the strategy and approach used in an earlier volume, The Future of the Dollar, from the same two editors and in this volume on the renminbi with contributions from scholars working in International Political Economy and Chinese studies. Reading this book in the summer of 2015 provided insight into the events surrounding the volatility of the Chinese stock exchanges, movements in the renminbi (RMB) foreign exchange rate, and the actions of the government to deal with both sets of events. At the same time, those actions provided evidence with which the arguments advanced in this collection could be better evaluated. Reading these studies alongside unfolding events served to clarify the value of The Great Wall of Money to scholars of China, global finance and China in the world economy. …
