Hydrogen as an energy carrier for vehicles is now also playing a major role in the field of charge exchange, both with regard to its use in the internal combustion engine and in the fuel cell. In the former case, important issues include the design of the valve control and exhaust gas recirculation systems as well as the injection system. But there is no need to develop many elements from scratch, instead they can be enhanced quasi evolutionarily on the basis of existing components. In the case of fuel cells, the purity of the fuel and the conditioning of the intake air as well as hydrogen and water management in the exhaust air are key isues that must be taken into account in order to ensure not only sufficient performance and the most efficient operation possible, but also the necessary service life of the units and long maintenance intervals. …
