This paper focuses on the characteristics of functions in large computing systems that are evaluated in the determination of function placement and selection of implementation media, i.e. software, microcode or hardware. It provides a basic understanding of the tradeoffs of some actual implementations of migrated software functions into microcode and hardware. Further the paper evaluates some future opportunities for significant restructure and function migration in large commercial systems.
