Experimental Assessment of Thermal Performance and Fluid Flow Characteristics of Perforated Hollow Elliptical Insert in a Tube Heat Exchanger

Abstract

A heat exchanger’s thermohydraulic performance is improved using a variety of passive ways with different insert geometries. At lower values of Reynolds number (Re), these procedures are typically effective; however, high Re yields ineffective outcomes. The current experimental investigation examines how a perforated solid hollow elliptical insert affects a circular tube heat exchanger’s overall performance. Different geometrical parameters, such as a fixed major axis equal to the hydraulic diameter of the tube (6.8 cm) and changing minor axes of 3, 4.5, and 5 cm, are utilized to provide the major to minor axis height ratio (HR = 0.74, 0.66 and 0.44), respectively. Elliptical inserts were inserted inside the tube in three different configurations as length and number of rings: (1) Full length (FL, N = 8), (2) Three-fourth length (3/4L, N = 6), and (3) Half-length (1/2L, N = 4) of the test section. The study’s Reynolds number ranges from 10,000 to 35,000, and it was conducted for turbulent flow. The increase in heat transfer, friction factor, and thermal performance factor from 1.64 to 2.81 times, 16 to 20 times, and 1.11 to 1.3 times, accordingly, was obtained by the experiment.
