Abstract

This chapter delves into the rich history of Human-Centered Design, from its roots in experimental psychology and ergonomics to its evolution through participatory design and social design. It highlights key milestones such as the establishment of Human Factors societies, the rise of Human-Computer Interaction, and the advent of Inclusive Design. The narrative underscores the importance of designing with and for people, emphasizing the interplay between psychological, technological, and social factors. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for new design approaches to address contemporary global challenges, making it a compelling read for those interested in the past, present, and future of Human-Centered Design.
“[…] We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives us abundance, has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent, and all will be lost. […] You, the people, have the power—the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure […].”
—Charlie Chaplin 1940 in The Great Dictator.
