Floods can be considered on a multitude of dimensions such as social, economic or environmental. The impact on the land surface is extremely diverse and it can involve erosion, changed soil characteristics caused by water stagnating in the flooded area and soil contamination caused by substances found in water or silt. Any reduction of the flood impact on the land surface can be viewed in terms of measures necessary before floods occur (i.e. flood prevention and soil erosion prevention), or measures to contain impacts during flood and restoration measures (i.e. after the flood).
