Distributed mobility management is a nascent research topic. Although there is already a corpus of publications addressing the new technical challenges that have emerged in this context, still much remains to be investigated. Our call for papers was answered by leading research groups from both industry and academia and we are pleased to include five papers in this special issue of the journal. Mobility management has been discussed in previous issues of telecommunication systems but we believe that this is the first special issue in any major peer-reviewed journal to address mobility management for future mobile infrastructure networks [1] in a comprehensive manner. …
