The Journal of Elasticity: The Physical and Mathematical Science of Solids is dedicated to the timely publication of advancements in special areas of the physical and mathematical science of solids that stimulate mechanics research at the fundamental level and promote interaction across disciplines in engineering, science and mathematics. The collection of 12 papers contained in this special volume on soft tissue mechanics is dedicated to multiscale modelling and mechanobiology issues which relate to arteries, the eye, the brain and the heart. Interactions between the mechanical environment of soft tissues within the body and their cellular biological properties is explored and discussed in these works. The contributions of this volume expose fundamental scaling problems in mechanobiology that could benefit from the attention of the mathematical science and computer science communities, and many modeling issues clearly involve nonlinear continuum mechanics and constitutive theory from the physical sciences. …
