Handbook of Argumentation Theory is meant to be a tool assisting students in finding their way in argumentation theory by providing an up-to-date survey of the various theoretical contributions to the development of this field of research. In this sense it is the successor of Fundamentals of Argumentation Theory: A Handbook of Historical Background and Contemporary Developments, published in (1996).1 Since 1996 numerous theoretical, empirical and practical developments have taken place within argumentation theory at a rapid pace. Therefore there were plenty of reasons for a ‘grand update’ in the shape of a 988 page handbook encompassing twelve chapters plus a classified bibliography (listing systematically the literature pertaining to the various theoretical approaches within argumentation theory), an alphabetical bibliography, an index of names and an index of subjects. …
