On January 31, Prof. Dr. Friedrich Rudolf Schwarzl passed away at the age of 94. From 1973 to 1993, he was a Professorial Head in “Kunststoffe” at the Institute for Materials Science and Engineering of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). Prof. Schwarzl began his studies of Theoretical Physics at the University of Vienna in 1945 and obtained his doctoral degree there in 1948 with a thesis about nucleon scattering. After 2 years in Nuclear Physics at the University of Graz in Austria, he moved to the Dutch Research Organization TNO. From 1950 to 1973, he worked there in several positions: first at the Polymer Institute and then from 1958 onward as Head of the Physical Department of the Central Laboratory in Delft. His time at TNO was the starting point for his career in Polymer Physics, a field still relatively new at this time. …
