Nikola Motor Company has showcased a fuel cell truck developed especially for Europe. The US start-up is already receiving pre-order reservations for the Nikola Tre.

Next spring, the first prototype of the Nikola Tre (means three in Norwegian) is expected to be on display. At the in-house Nikola World trade fair in Phoenix, Arizona, attendees should witness the truck in action, pulling trailers. Hydrogen filling at 700 bar will also be shown at the event.

The Nikola Tre was developed especially for European customers and should be available as a 6x4 or 6x2 drivetrain, in different configurations and sizes. The truck has an output of 368 to 735 kW (500-1,000 hp), with an expected range between 500 and 1,200 kilometres.

Nikola Tre could be in series production in 2022

Testing is projected to begin in Norway in 2020. Nikola is looking for a facility in Europe to begin production around 2022, according to the company. Nikola is also working with Oslo-based Nel Hydrogen to roll out a network of hydrogen filling stations for the USA. Over 700 hydrogen stations are planned across the USA and Canada by 2028, with a daily production capacity of 2,000 to 8,000 kilograms of hydrogen, according to Nikola. The first European stations are scheduled to go online in 2022.
