Gilbert Rozman’s East Asia National Identities is an innovative account of East Asian regional identity in the field of regional studies/ international relations. Identities is divided into two parts, with part one written exclusively by Rozman, a professor emeritus at Princeton University. In these chapters, he systematically applies a six dimensional framework to Japan (chapter 1), South Korea (chapter 2), China (chapter 3) and East Asia (chapter 4). Part two examines the evolution of national identifies and includes six East Asian contributors (K. Togo, Y. Hosoya, A. Kim, C. Moon, L. Jin, and W. Ming) writing two chapters each on Japan (chapters 5–6), South Korea (chapters 7–8) and China (chapters 9–10). This is the first of three volumes edited by Gilbert Rozman for the Wilson Center Press. The second volume is National Identities and Bilateral Relations: Widening Gaps in East Asia and Chinese Demonization of the United States, and at the time of this review, an untitled third volume is in development. …
