Abstract

Introduction

Sexist behaviors particularly affect women and LGTBI people. In the Spanish context, there is increasing interest in efforts to promote gender equality and respect for sexual diversity in universities. Public pedagogy has been shown to be helpful for reconsidering discriminatory beliefs and behaviors in the public space. This research evaluates nine queer artivist actions carried out from the perspective of arts-based public pedagogy, in order to define the characteristics that help to foster sensitivity to equality in diversity in the university community.

Methods

A total of 762 members (students, professors, and administrative staff) of three Spanish universities participated in the study. Data collection took place in 2021. The impact is analyzed in terms of cognitive, affective, moral, and sensitivity levels, depending on the characteristics of the actions.

Results

Certain characteristics are linked to a positive impact on participant and observer audiences, such as focusing the actions on attitudes and emotions, identifying and redefining problems as creative resources, avoiding the ludic method, and not using aesthetics as an awareness-raising strategy.

Conclusions and Policy Implications

Specific characteristics of awareness actions are identified, depending on the type of audience. Universities should promote inclusive communities by enacting awareness campaigns to advance respect for sexual and gender minorities. More research is needed to further explore outcomes associated with arts-based public pedagogy. Specific content related to equality in diversity should be considered before making inclusive policy decisions in universities.
