A hydrostatic environment is one in which there is no internal motion or movement of fluid. The pressure gradient is vertical, attributable to gravity only, the pressure resulting from the weight of overlying fluids, as discussed earlier. As anyone who has swum to the bottom of a deep lake has felt, the pressure increases markedly with depth below the surface where the fluid pressure is zero.
