One of the reasons that the dynamics of ice sheets are studied is the desire to obtain knowledge about their future behaviour. In particular during the last few million years ice volume on earth varied enormously. Cold periods with huge ice sheets on the northern hemisphere continents were interrupted by relatively warm interglacials, in which only the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica survived. From a purely statistical point of view, it is very likely that a new ice age is on its way.
