Abstract

This work proposes an interactive method of view planning for capturing the whole surface of an object with minimum prior knowledge of its shape and with the assistance of standard computer vision algorithms. Two notions have been defined, i.e. Main Face Groups (MFGs) and Difficult Regions (DRs) and are central to the method. The method aims to help the human operator through intermediate result assessment based on empirical criteria. In the case of not acceptable scans the type of error is recognized and pertinent solutions are proposed. The method consists of a Preparatory stage, a MFG-based scanning stage and a DR scanning stage. Equipment workspace and accuracy limitations are taken into account. Explanatory applications are presented regarding common practice and possible faults and their rectification within the interactive framework.
