ABB Turbocharging’s electro-hydraulic VCM Valve Control Management for variation of valve timing and lift or large four-stroke diesel and gas engines has passed a further important milestone in its development and industrialisation process. In tests on a Series 4000 gas engine operating in the cogeneration plant at MTU’s works in Friedrichshafen, Germany, the VCM units installed have all logged 7000 operating hours over a twelve month period. During that time measurements of valve lift curves have shown excellent repeatability while periodic inspections of the VCM actuators have revealed neither wear nor ageing effects, MTU and ABB confirm. The tests will now continue until spring 2017. As well as considerable potential as an instrument for engine control, VCM is an important addition on engines with high pressure single and two-stage turbocharging systems, including those employing the Miller cycle to achieve increased power density, reduced fuel consumption and considerably lower NO_x emissions.
