This paper is an investigation of ‘the machine question’ that David Gunkel (The Machine Question, 2012) articulates as the question of whether there is a possibility that machines could qualify as moral agents and/or patients, deserving of inclusion in ethical considerations. As Gunkel says in his conclusion, “We began by questioning the place of the machine in ethics. It appeared, at the outset at least, to be a rather simple and direct inquiry. Either computers, AI’s, robots and other mechanisms are a legitimate moral agent and/or patient, or they are not” (Gunkel 2012, p. 210). The question of this paper is: Is the machine question the same question as the animal question? …
