This volume is organized into four sections—social order, economics, politics and systemic constraints—each of which consists of three to four chapters. Elizabeth Perry’s chapter on popular protest follows the editor’s introduction. This arrangement highlights the editor’s concern about social stability and social life in China, ‘which lie at the heart of China’s evolving political economy’ (p.2).
